The 41st Otaru Ushio Festival

Ushio Festival is a movable feast, and it takes place in Otaru, Hokkaido from July 27th through 29th this year.

Ushio Festival is a festival originated out of gratitude for the sea and wishing for the prosperity of Otaru in Hokkaido since Otaru is a port city.

The highlight of this festival must be Ushio Nerikomi (Ushio Dance procession) on the 28th (Sat.). Thousands of townspeople in uniform Yukata dance along to the music of Ushio Dance for hours from early afternoon into the night. The best spot to see the procession might be Chuo-dori street leading out of JR Otaru station.

Portable shrine parade, which is also passing through Chuo-dori street, is another spectacular. It takes place between 13:30~17:00 on the 29th (Sun.).

Ushio Festival is concluded by the big fireworks display held from 20:00 to 21:00.

Many more events including performances on the stage, and stalls to entertain visitors are planned at Pier No.3, the festival venue, during the three-day festival period.

We hope you visit Otaru this weekend, and live it up in Ushio Festival!
