Lake Shikotsu

Lake Shikotsu is a beautiful caldera lake located near New Chitose Airport.

It is the second deepest lake in Japan, and it boasts outstanding transparency that is comparable to Lake Baikal in Russia.

In Lake Shikotsu, kokanee brought in from Lake Akan in eastern Hokkaido about more than 100 years ago is farmed, and it is served as a specialty at the lakeside restaurants.

Wonderful views of Mt.Tarumae, an active volcano, and Mt.Eniwa that was the downhill race site when Sapporo Winter Olympic Games was held in 1972 can be seen from the lake, too.

If you would like to conclude your trip to Hokkaido in a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere before leaving from New Chitose Airport, staying at Lake Shikotsu must be a good idea, as there are some nice small-sized hot spring hotels at the lakeside.
